Latest Updates from Our Project:

Depending on the country still on the way...

Dear backer,

Did you get your copy yet? If so, we would be happy if you share it with us here or on social media channels. The two-volume book might have arrived in Switzerland, Germany and other European countries. If you haven't received it yet, maybe you live outside Europe? As announced in the update at the beginning of November, it will take longer time in the USA, for example. We wanted to keep your shipping costs as low as possible, so a local distributor will take care of shipping.

Various covers

Some of you have asked about the different covers and slipcases that you might have seen on Niggl's social media accounts or somewhere else. It was important to us to produce an exclusive Kickstarter edition. Above all - and this is unique in Niggli's publishing history - the publisher decided to produce two different versions, because the author and the graphic designer had very different ideas about what this work should look like. There was a lot of discussion and controversy!

How to present so many different design identities in a book? It was rather clear that the layout should organize the content. But how to design the cover? Renowned friends from the graphic arts scene were involved in the discussion and most preferred the very clear, puristic Kickstarter design. The argument: It fits better to the overall layout. Nevertheless, the author's preferred, somewhat louder version was to be available in bookshops.

The fact that the Kickstarter copy finally doesn't have a motif on the slipcase is due to the fact that we only worked with a dummy at the time of the campaign and the final idea didn't yet exist. After all, a slipcase serves above all to protect the books.

What about the content? It's the same in both.

We hope you are or will be happy with your Olympic book and please let us express our gratitude for having backed Markus unique and first-ever publication!

We will keep you updated!

Book launch party in Berlin and other news
over 4 years ago – Mon, Nov 04, 2019 at 11:00:41 PM

Last weekend we had the pleasure to celebrate the launch of Olympic Games – The Design in the beautiful book shop Buecherbogen in Berlin.  Canadian Ben Hulse (https://hulsedurrell.com)  talked about his work for the Vancouver 2010 Games and the challenges of finding an identity for this big public event.

Author Markus Osterwalder got together with his family and friends as well as design enthusiasts and liked to share some funny and difficult experiences he had during his 24/7 job of writing the first book about the entire design history of the Olympic Games.

The books are printed and will soon reach the warehouse. For those who were confused because they saw different covers online - there is an exclusive Kickstarter edition and a bookstore edition. The wonderful and insightful content is the same!

The two-volume book will then leave the warehouse and embark on its journey. Depending on the country, this may take a few weeks.

Please accept our apologies for the delay. It was also a great challenge for us as an experienced publisher to carry out such a huge project. Copyright issues had to be clarified again and again. Especially the proof-reading and adjustments were very extensive with these amounts of picture and text material. The book designers did an amazing job!

Thank you for your comprehension!

All the best from Markus and the staff of the publishing house Niggli Verlag.

Today: Exciting proof of the 2 volumes book “Olympic Games - The Design”

Dear backer,

Markus Osterwalder and publisher Markus Sebastian Braun went today to the printing house DZA Druck in Leipzig, Germany. They have attended the press proof of Olympic Games - The Design and everything is running just perfect! For Markus it is a once-in-a-lifetime moment after having spent 24/7 working on the project.

We are more than happy that we could go local. Printing in Europe was one of our final aimes during the Kickstarter campaign. Thank you very much for making this possible!

The author is checking the quality.

A wonderful journey!

Dear backer,

You have brought my dream project to life! I am infinitely grateful. It shows how rewarding it is to believe in one's dreams and to realize them.

The community here has carried me on to finish the last chapters. In about a week I will submit the last pages of Olympic Games – The Design to the publisher. We are still waiting some of the essays on selected design topics, everything is currently being translated into English. Finally an editor looks over it, the graphic designers make the final adjustments, and then it's off to the final phase!

Thank you so much!

Markus

“It’s hard to believe...”

Creative Review’s writer Megan William:

“It’s hard to believe that the Olympic Games – The Design will be the first book of its kind. Then again, with the book racking up a mammoth 1,600 pages (which had to be split over two volumes), perhaps it’s not so surprising that everyone else has avoided the mountainous task thus far.”
